The four provinces Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and New Foundland are called Atlantic Canada here. For us this was a region we did not have in mind, when we thought of Canada. But as we started our trip across the country in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, we traveled via Cape Breton and New Brunswick to the peninsula of Gaspésie in Québec. The landscape reminded us very much about Scotland, but with much more forest.
We found such beautiful places to stay sometimes on a private or public campground sometimes just in the nature in a bay or on a cliff, but always having the sea close, the sound of waves and breathtaking sunrises or sunsets inclusive.
But at this time of the year in this region there is one speciality available: Lobster! Nearly in each village one can find a small harbourfull with lobster boats and lobster traps. It cannot be fresher anywhere else. So we also came to the conclusion that we have to try this delicacy. But this is easier said than done. When the waitress brought the lobster to our table she delivered also an incredible set of tools like special pliers, a spear, a special knife... We looked at it with respect and had no clue how to go about this task. Our please for help was understood and an elder man from the table next to us came to give us an introduction in "How to eat a lobster", what he did with the necessary accuracy. Obviously he was the specialist in the village. But now the whole restaurant knew about our situation and we could nearly feel how they observed our performance. We assume all in all we did quite well. Later we heard that sometimes if there is a lobster feast, they distribute aprons and put old newspaper on the tables. And was it worth it? Yes, it tasted really extraordenary good, but we doubt that take up the fight again also considering the cruel killing of the animals.
