It does not astonish us that the astronauts of Apollo 11 tested their material in this area before having their first mission to the moon. All of a sudden appear huge black lava fields in the yellow hilly grasslands of Idoha. They look so strange in this surrounding and seem to be completely inhospitable. But only after we entered we realize how bizarre, but still beautiful this landscape really is.
This area has been formed by fissures and cracks in the earth's crust, bringing lava to the surface again and again, which only stopped about 2000 years ago.
We use the golden light at our first night here to explore the area a little bit and see the mountains and hills reflecting in red and orange colours. There is a loop one can drive by car and at
many places shorter and longer trails invite for a walk. We are astonished how many beautiful plants grow on this rocky, barren fields.
Good information also offers the visitor's centre. After watching a film we understand how much movement is still underneath in the inner of our planet and experts are sure that erruptions will happen again and give a completely new shape to this area.
We as humans think in such small dimensions.
The next day our hike brings us into deep craters and lava caves which were formed when hot lava still flowed under the surface, but the crust was already cold. And on our bicycles we wizz down the hills to the campground.
In the evening it gets cold here and at night millions of stars appear at a completely black sky. Later as the moon joins we are sure that we are not on the moon, although it feels a little bit like that.
